FDNY firefighter saves obese man with Quick Thinking with WEBBING

NY1 News VIDEO + Story - A quick-thinking firefighter helped rescue an obese man from a fire in Queens earlier this week.

Firefighters responded to the call Sunday night on 97th Street in Rego Park. The first three on the scene say they realized a chain was on one of the apartment doors, meaning that someone was likely trapped.

The firefighters then broke into the smoked-out apartment without a hose and found a 400-plus pound man lying in the hallway...READ COMPLETE and video regarding the webbing.

A Manitou volunteer firefighter on his way to a fatal accident on Rose Creek Road in Hopkins County Saturday, lost control of the fire truck, hitting another vehicle head-on and killing the driver.

Kentucky State Police said this accident occurred around 11:15 a.m. when volunteer firefighter Jarod Turner, 22, Madisonville, was operating a 1981 Chevrolet fire truck, southbound on Kentucky 630 -- heading toward a fatal accident, which had occurred just minutes before.

For unknown reasons, the fire truck -- which had its emergency lights activated -- traveled off the road. When it reentered the road, Turner lost control of it, authorities said. From the moment Maplewood firefighter Ryan Hummert died, firefighters were there.

At first, it was his Maplewood crew, who, along with 22-year-old Hummert, had thought they were responding Monday to a routine car fire. Instead, they found themselves in the middle of a gunman's killing field.

Before it was over, two police officers were shot, Hummert was killed and several other bullets barely missed their intended targets.

Greenbaypressgazette.com is reporting a Pulaski Tri-County Fire Chief Frank Wichlacz was killed in a random accident. An out of control pickup truck crashed and crushed Chief Wichlacz between a garage door and a water tanker.

A member of the department was moving a privately owned GMC pickup that was blocking a bay door where one of the department’s tankers needed to be parked. The firefighter backed the pickup toward the fire station, moving the vehicle one bay door to the east.

FDNY - Firefighter Drowns Trying to Save Son

The wake for FDNY Ladder 111 Brooklyn Firefighter Martin Simmons is today in Smithtown, NY. Simmons died diving into Lake Tahoe to try to save his 10 year old son. It is reported his "son who had developed a cramp and struggled to stay afloat. The child was pulled to safety, but Simmons drowned". Simmons was a well respected 17 year veteran in the FDNY, a husband, and a father of three sons.
