SAN FRANCISCO - Eight firefighters and a pilot are presumed dead in the crash of a helicopter that had just picked up workers battling a blaze in a Northern California forest, officials said Wednesday.

The helicopter had lifted off from a clearing in a remote, rugged region of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, said Jennifer Rabuck, spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service.

The aircraft was carrying 11 firefighters and two crew members when it went down Tuesday night in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board...READ MORE

OGDENSBURG, N.Y. -- State police have released the name of the trooper who died in a tragic accident in Ogdensburg last night. Trooper Shawn Snow, 47, was helping Pierre Surprenant, 51, a Canadian man whose antique fire truck got a flat tire just before the entrance to the Prescott Bridge. Police say while they were fixing the flat, the truck's ladder swung around and hit power lines that were hanging above, killing both men instantly. At this point, no one is quite sure why the ladder was up...READ MORE

Firefighter Close Call - Live Burning Operations
Tuesday, 05 August 2008

I just recently found the original video to this close call video. The video features firefighters during what appears to be a live burn scenerio. I am not sure if this is a case of "I want a salty helmet", or "I am invincable to fire". Either way it is evidence of a poor decision.

Vintage Firefighter Close Call - Fuel Tank Explosion
Tuesday, 05 August 2008

This video is proof close calls are not a new thing to the fire service. It is no surprise to any of us that a dangerous profession is full of near misses and close calls. My goal is to hopefully educate you all with these powerful videos to make you think twice at the next job.

Be on your toes, not on your back.

My articles over at Fire Rescue 1 have become a huge hit. The articles integrate video and text to convey the message. I encourage you to take a look at them and see what you think.

Over-Aggressive Attacks on Vehicle Fires - Most Popular Article EVER~!

When it comes to smaller-scaled fires, many of us are not taking them seriously enough. All too many fire departments appear to be operating with more casual procedures when it comes to those "routine fires." The best example of this reveals itself in videos taken during vehicle fires. Whether it be due to attitudes such as "it's just a car fire" or "my officer doesn't pack up" isn't clear. But the problem is there, and firefighters are getting hurt as a result of aggressive attacks on car fires without full protection and with a sense of complacency...READ MORE WITH VIDEOS

Near Misses Highlight Poor Communication

Portable radios in the fire service are a widely discussed topic. But what often seems to be overlooked is not the design or reliability of the radio and communications in general, but the actual use of them. Online videos are increasingly revealing a dangerous trend of complacency in the fire service. They're highlighting freelancing and a lack of knowledge in the overall command structure and general safety of other firefighters...READ MORE WITH VIDEOS

Scene Control at Motor Vehicle Accidents

Incident command is often left in a position at motor vehicle accidents to leave part of a road open. In theory this makes sense — clear the scene of a motor vehicle accident without disrupting normal flow of traffic. All seems fine on paper, but this mentality is destroying emergency vehicles, injuring rescue personal, and in some cases killing them...READ MORE WITH VIDEOS

Turn A Window Into a Door
Monday, 04 August 2008

This video brought to my attention the need to urge fellow firefighters to clear the window completely. First and foremost radio below to make sure the area is clear of firefighters.  Attack the frame and get the entire window out. Do not just knock out glass.  In the case of the double hung windows in this video, a great attack is right at the center rail of the window.  Once that is blown out attack the frame. All glass should be removed at that point. If any additional glass is there...you need to clear out the frame or if pressed for time use the halogen to clear the remaining glass. In case of emergency you will now be able to actually get out of the window.

Near 5 minutes into the video the roof vent seems to flash and really take off. The firefighters are forced off the roof as a result.

Here is a good read from NFPA on security windows
